Hero’s Warrior’s Journal: Day 1

Pat always said that a great warrior must train themselves in one of the fine skills and not just combat. I think I’ve hit new low, so I’m willing to try anything at this point. Maybe practicing writing and calligraphy will help. Maybe I’ll purchase some cooking tools too.

Today I came back from a week out hunting. I’ve been in this town for almost a month. It’s been exactly 8 weeks since I woke up in the hospital. The scar on the back of my head stopped swelling and my head no longer hurts. I’m a mediocre hunter. I’m not the stealthiest. That would be ok if was a good shot with a bow, but I don’t know how these guys hit shots from 1000 or more feet away from a moving target. They all say that I should spend more time at the range, but it’s so boring sitting around and waiting for an hour between chances to shoot 15 arrows. I need some action in my training! At least I can practice my boxing against the training dummies while I’m in town. Or maybe I can convince a sucker, one of the town guards, to hold my pads.

When we got back to town, I went right to the bookmaker and bought this journal, a quill and some ink. Hopefully this helps me push through my mental block.

As I was writing, Vera came to the barracks looking for me. At first I was terrified that someone in town figured out that I’m half orc. Turns out they’re short on people for watch and since I haven’t been performing well, The Hunter’s Guild didn’t argue over her taking me. Vera doesn’t say it, but I think she wants to see me in action. She brought me to the nice tavern and left me at the door while she talked to Jaren about who knows what. Then they brought me over to a table with 2 other people I’ve seen around town before, but never talked to; A halfling, Pierre, who seems to be around the same age as me and human woman, Lenora, who I’d guess is a few years older than me. Jaren wants the three of us on watch tomorrow night. Lenora is a young priest who seems to have earned a level of respect from people around town. I’ve seen Pierre messing with strange devices, but people don’t seem to take him seriously. They asked about who I am and where I’m from. I didn’t tell them much and they seemed disappointed. It would be nice to be more open, but I don’t know how they would react if I showed them my tusks or if they can keep a secret. I don’t need the crew back home finding out I’m not actually dead.

I beat some guy at plats (3 dragon ante) and he gave me his drink. At least I got some kinda win today.

Lenora and Pierre seem like they have potential, but I’ll see how they perform under pressure.

Warrior’s Journal: Day 2

Pierre, Lenora, and I met the gravekeeper this morning, after meeting at the tavern last night. He’s half hobgoblin and I gave him the outsider’s greeting. I figure if anyone’s knows I’m half orc, it’s him. He explained the mission, guarding sheep. Boring and low stakes, but if they’ve requested my help then something must be going on. If I lead the team to successful shifts on watch, maybe we’ll get some REAL missions.

After the brief, he knocked us out until the beginning of our shift. I asked him to wake me up early enough to get in some meditation, stretching, and writing. I need be at the top of my game tonight.

Warrior’s Journal: Day 3

Our watch was mostly successful. A few goblins managed to steal a sheep. Luckily, we noticed this quickly and Pierre was able to follow their tracks back to the woods. I thought we should follow and try ambush them. Maybe we’d be able to recover the sheep. I shuttered my lantern and so did Pierre and Lenora. Then the followed me into the woods. This was my first mistake. I always forget that most people can’t see in the dark. Anyway, the goblins left the sheep, dead, in the woods as a trap. I started investigating the sheep, my second mistake, and the goblins ambushed me. I think two of them dropped from a tree. Luckily, one of them missed and I was faster than they thought. I opened my lantern up, and spun around kicked one of the goblins in the head, but it wasn’t a good one and the goblin was still standing. Then Pierre shot ball of fire and burnt the other goblin to a crisp. I didn’t know the little guy had that kinda powerful magic! He’s definitely got some fight in him. Lenora finished off the goblin I kicked in the head with her mace, but she almost missed…

Pierre determined that the third goblin ran off into deeper in the woods, probably back to their hideout. I cut off the dead goblins’ left ears and severed their heads. Of course I offered Pierre the burnt ear. I carried the sheep and the goblin heads back to the guards and we finished the watch.

In the morning, Jaren had Pierre and me hand over the goblin ears and paid us 1 gold each. At least Jaren gave Pierre the ingot he promised. I went to the senior priest in town to fully recover from the fight. I’m exhausted and I wanna sleep for the rest of the day.

Hopefully Pierre and Lenora haven’t figured out I’m an orc, and if they have, maybe they’ll keep their mouths shut.

Warrior’s Journal: Day 4

I tried to get the top guy in the town guard to spar with me today, but his officers said that he was busy. I know if we continue performing our duties well, I’ll get my opportunity. Thankfully Vera was willing to spar, but she likes sword fighting. LAME! I came surprisingly close to getting her, but she has this way of getting in a follow up hit. I was able to stay in fight long enough that I think I’ve figured out how she did it. Maybe I’ll get a chance to try it out on some goblins before my rematch with her.

Pierre and Lenora mentioned something about a festival. Hopefully there’s a tournament, fighting or cards, that I can enter. I think Pierre is working on some kinda fireworks thing for the festival. I overheard him talking about it with Lenora. After seeing him melt that goblin in the woods, I wanna see what his fireworks look like.
